چکیده

We present VTL/ISAAC infrared spectroscopy of a sample of short orbital period cataclysmic variables which are candidates for harboring substellar companions. We have detected the K i and Na i absorption lines of the companion star in VY Aqr. The overall spectral distribution in this system is best fit with a M9.5 type dwarf spectra, implying a distance of 100 ± 10 pc. VY Aqr seems to fall far from the theoretical distribution of secondary star temperatures around the orbital period minimum. Fitting of the IR spectral energy distribution (SED) was performed by comparing the observed spectrum with late-type templates. The application of such a spectral fitting procedure suggests that the continuum shape in the 1.1-2.5 μm spectral region in short orbital period cataclysmic variables may be an useful indicator of the companion spectral type. The SED fitting for RZ Leo and CU Vel suggests M5 type dwarf companions, and distances of 340 ± 110 and 150 ± 50 pc, respectively. These systems may be placed in the upper evolution branch for short period cataclysmic variables.

The Formation of Cataclysmic Variables with Brown Dwarf Secondaries

The present-day formation of cataclysmic variables (CVs) with brown dwarf (BD) secondaries (0.013 M⊙ ≤ Ms ≤ 0.075 M⊙) is investigated using a population synthesis technique. Results from the latest, detailed models for BDs have been incorporated into the population synthesis code. The present-day orbital period distribution of zero-age CVs (ZACVs) that form with BD secondaries is calculated. Fo...

Cataclysmic Variables with Evolved Secondaries and the Progenitors of AM CVn Stars

We present the results of a systematic study of cataclysmic variables (CVs) and related systems, combining detailed binary-population synthesis (BPS) models with a grid of 120 binary evolution sequences calculated with a Henyey-type stellar evolution code. In these sequences, we used 3 masses for the white dwarf (0.6, 0.8, 1.0M⊙) and seven masses for the donor star in the range of 0.6 − 1.4M⊙. ...

Erupting Cataclysmic Variable Stars in the Nearest Globular Cluster , NGC 6397 : Intermediate Polars ?

NGC 6397 is the closest globular cluster, and hence the ideal place to search for faint stellar populations such as cataclysmic variables (CVs). HST and Chandra observers have identified nine certain and likely CVs in this nearby cluster, including several magnetic CV candidates. We have combined our recent UV imagery with archival HST images of NGC 6397 to search for new CV candidates and espe...

Evidence for a substellar secondary in the magnetic cataclysmic binary EF

Low-state spectrophotometry of the short-period polar EF Eridani (P orb = 81 min) found the system at V = 18:0 with no trace of the companion (Wheatley and Ramsay 1998). We show that the lack of such spectral features implies that the companion to the white dwarf in EF Eri has a spectral type later than M9 and is either a transition object at the brink of hydrogen burning or a brown dwarf. The ...

SDSS J 150722 . 30 + 523039 . 8 : a CV formed directly from a detached white dwarf / brown dwarf binary ?

We present high-speed, three-colour photometry of the eclipsing cataclysmic variable SDSS J150722.30+523039.8 (hereafter SDSS J1507). This system has an orbital period of 66.61 minutes, placing it below the observed “period minimum” for cataclysmic variables. We determine the system parameters via a parameterised model of the eclipse fitted to the observed lightcurve by χ minimisation. We obtai...
